Flippancy is the fulcrum of this
film. In fairness to the film maker it is also the language employed in the
promos so you cannot plead surprise. So over loaded it is with the chaos and
poor editing that you need to concentrate to keep abreast of the happenings and
connect it to the story line .
Matrimony has been a fine premise to be joking about. As the oldest lasting
human institution we all have our light hearted take on it. The premise is thus
a solid foundation to build a light hearted comedy. Yet, Director Ashwini
Chaudry fails to deliver. He ends with a chaotic noise filled product that you
kick yourself for watching. You remind yourself that discretion is the better
part of adventure and the mere holding out that this is a light hearted comedy
is no good cause for viewing the film. Marriage, yes or no, this is truly an
invitation to disaster.
Sid (Madhavan) is the just divorced guy who goes to town about his single
status and recent divorce. The divorced wife (Mrinalini Sharma) has taken away
with her his prized car and a hefty alimony. He spends time with his friends
(including Omi Vaidya) at a pub: Nano Bar. Nano is incidentally how Omi is
referred to. It is here that he runs into Sonali ( Bipasha Basu). The two of
them see a huge business prospect in breaking marriages. Among the victims are
a happy couple Marc and Maggie ( Milind Soman and Dipanitta Sharma). As the
couple are having a great time in Greece, the Jodi Breakers are scheming to
break the marriage. Some strategic alterations is supposed to be the hidden
nuance and if that too is revealed even the fig leaf of pretext to watch the
film would disappear. So let be.
Our successful Jodi Breakers now go about the task of saving the marriage. For
assistance they have Mac’s grandma Helen (who adds nostalgic value). By now
every one is angry with every one else and are keeping up pretensions. Then we
have the guys falling all over the place to make up with the wronged gals. Yawn
and sleep and wake up and things are still at the same stage. Suddenly Grandma
decides enough is enough or the guys who rented the Goan bungalow have had
enough and so the Director calls it quits.
We now are geared into a climax which is more filled with relief than surprise
twist or conflict. The mishap on matrimony is a bigger mishap than matrimony
and the Jodi Breakers decide to lip lock and sign off. For what ever reason,
this brings to end the film and with it comes relief to the audience who dared
to watch this claimed comedy.
Bipasha Basu seems to believe that her job is to look sensuous and not act. She
delivers what she understands to be her role. With prim and propah Dipannitta
and Milind Soman, you wonder where the film maker delegated the task of casting
his team. They look good. If only they could bring even a disproportionate element
of acting talent the script could have had some credibility. Madhavan looks
plump and nearly middle aged in comparison. Here too the Director should have
conceived the cast better.
Jodi Breakers- better referred to as Peace breakers.
