This Sanjay Gupta crime thriller
showcases Hrithik Roshan as arguably one of our best actors. Without going into
the genesis of the plot and its western inspirations, it is noteworthy to point
out that the two hours plus entertainer keeps you engaged all the while, or at
least from when its changes tracks from a mushy love tale to a crime thriller
(which obviously is where the director’s expertise lies).
Rohan (Hrithik) and Supriya (Yami Gautham) kick start the narration with a
match making blind date, literally – they are both visually challenged. The
chemistry is instant. Within five minutes into the film you have glimpses of
Hrithik the actor and the dancing enigma he is. Made of Indian rubber!! The
build-up is very linear, slow steadfast, old fashioned but musical and charming
if you have the patience and are willing to compare it with the one in the
neighbouring theatre where the fifty plus guy is romancing the gal from across
the border!! Soon the lead pair are into matrimony and there is trouble in
paradise. The local goon Amit (Rohit Roy) and his friend Wasim (Shahidar
Rahman) start ogling at the visually impaired girl. She is a pianist, and he a
dubbing artist for cartoon films with exceptional talent. Days into the
marriage Su is raped by the two guys not once but twice and she decides to take
the final fatal step. The police officers – (Girish Kulkarni and Narendra Jha)
drag their feet with the investigation to suit the local Corporator Madhav Rao
(Ronit Roy).
With no assistance from the police Rohan declares that he has his vendetta
script in place and that the police would be found gaping as he executes the
revenge story. How he goes about it all is what constitutes the later part of
the film.
What stands out is the style with which the film maker executes a not so fresh
script. He gives it just the right dose of thrill and ensures that the audience
is not left too far behind in interest or guess work. His protagonist plans a
nearly visible plan and backs the plan with some deft thrills and execution.
The cast does its bit. Representatives of the evil – the Roy brothers ensure
that they stay clear of the typical Hindi film villain types and have a suave
presence. The corrupt police officers are a contrast in approach but both bring
in a lot of credibility. However the one point fulcrum other than the clean
execution is doubtlessly Hrithik Roshan. Effervescent. The guy just does not
have a Greek God personality but here alongside the demands of the script,
turns out to being Apollo to Ares, Erbus and Eros all rolled in one. This is
yet another winning performance from an actor who his multiple awards not
withstanding is still seen as a possible star than an amazing actor.
The title song would ask Mein tere kaabil hoon ya Kaabil nahi. The film maker
and the star have sure earned a positive certificate. Now it is for the
audience to respond in the name of good commercial cinema. There was this
debate as to how the filmmaker dared to release his film alongside a Khan
starer. The answer is very simple. Quality film. What more can he sell?
